Thattukada stands as the UK’s first authentic Kerala toddy shop (kallu shaap), opened by John Xavier from Chilavannoor in 2021. This pioneering establishment in Northampton recreates Kerala’s traditional toddy parlor experience, complete with Malayalam signboards that attract Malayalis from as far as Scotland and Ireland. The restaurant imports toddy monthly, selling 30-40 liters daily alongside other Kerala-centric alcoholic beverages including “Mandakini” arrack from Canada and “Malayali” beer from Poland, both created by Keralites abroad. The menu features authentic toddy shop fare including porotta paired with beef, seafood preparations of squid, prawns, crab, and mussels, with the unique specialty of frog legs – once a popular item in Kerala’s toddy parlours. Xavier also launched his UK-based liquor brand “Manavatty,” offering distinctive spirits that blend Indian heritage with contemporary innovation. The establishment has gained viral popularity through social media, with customers praising dishes like “Deer Kanthari” for perfectly cooked meat spiced with authentic Kerala spices. This cultural landmark serves as both a nostalgic destination for homesick Malayalis and an adventurous dining experience for curious locals.
