What is in the book

Twelve A4 landscape pages: a cover, ten word pages and a back cover. Each word page is one part of a toddler's day, ten words to a page, every word in Malayalam script with the transliteration underneath so that a parent who reads Malayalam and one who does not can share the same book.

The list keeps the English loanwords Malayali families in Britain use every day,ബസ്, കാർ, ഷൂ,ടെഡി, because pretending they are not Malayalam would make the book less useful, not more. ആന is there too; a child should know the word before the zoo.

Why a printable, not a bought board book

Malayalam board books sold in Britain are few, imported and generic. A printable one carries the child's own name, the family's own faces and the vocabulary of a British childhood, and it costs a few sheets of card. If it is chewed to pieces, print another.

How to print and bind it

  1. Press Print / Save as PDF in the maker above.
  2. A4, landscape, 100% scale, never "fit to page", with background graphics on.
  3. Double-sided, flipped on the short edge. Twelve pages become six sheets.
  4. Card of 160 to 170gsm feels like a book; laminate it if it is going to be chewed.
  5. Bind the left short edge with book rings or comb binding. Any high-street print shop will do it while you wait.

Is this really free?

Yes. It is a UKMalayalam community project. Nothing is sold and there is no sign-up.

Is it a board book?

It is a printable alternative to a Malayalam board book: twelve A4 landscape pages you print at home and bind with rings or comb binding. Print on 160–170gsm card, or laminate the sheets if it is going to be chewed.

Can I add my child's name?

Yes. Type it in English letters and the Malayalam fills in. You can choose the written form (കുക്കുവിന്റെ) or the spoken form (കുക്കൂന്റെ) for the cover.

Can I add family photos?

Yes. Photos of അമ്മ, അച്ഛൻ, അമ്മൂമ്മ and the rest replace the painted family page. They never leave your device: nothing is uploaded.

Which words are in it?

99 first words a Malayali child growing up in Britain meets every day, across people, home, food, clothes, weather, vehicles, the park, animals, the body and bedtime — including the English loanwords Malayali families actually use, such as ബസ്, ഷൂ and ടെഡി.

What age is it for?

Roughly ten months to three years: pointing and naming first, then first words, then early reading of the script.
